As I was driving home from dropping my youngest off at school, I thought how lucky I was to be able to do that. I work from home as a Medical Coder and it allows me to drop off and pick up my kids at school.
I know that the pick up and drop off lines can be stressful and challenging at times. Dumb parents leaving their cars (they aren’t supposed to at our school), cutting in line (this is where kids learn it from…their parents), getting the evil eye from another parent for something you had no idea that you did. The compaints are endless.
In the end, some of of us are so luck and blessed to be able to do this. Many parents are unable to drop off and pick up because of their work school. Many families are double income families, meaning both the parents work full time jobs outside of the home. We’ve been one of those families. Now, I am grateful to have my full time job with amazing benefits, but able to work out of my home office, allowing me to be there in the morning when the kids go to school and in the afternoon when it’s time for them to come home.
So, I’m saying all this to ask you to be grateful if you are able to pick your child up or drop them off at school. Don’t let another parent having a bad day ruin this precious time with your child. Many times, they’ve had a bad day, may have lost their job, may have had their boss go off on them, or perhaps received bad news. It’s not your problem, it’s theirs. Give them grace and put a smile on your face when your child exits or enters your car. They are so happy to see you and want your full attention!
It’s time again for the kids to go back to school. Mine have already gone back and things are going smoothly so far. Here are some helpful habits for back to school time for your kids and for you!
Start the back to school routine BEFORE school actually starts. The girls started school on a Thursday, so we started the back to school bed time on Monday. They got into the routine of shower, brush teeth, get clothes ready, get backpack ready, and then bedtime for reading then sleep. They were ready for the back to school night because they had been preparing the whole week.
The morning routine is almost more important that the night. The biggest thing to do in the morning is BREAKFAST! Make sure they have a good breakfast before they leave for the day. My 8 year old tends to have Carnation Instant breakfast as she is a very picky eater, so she doesn’t get all of the nutrients she needs. These drinks always give her a great start. My 13 year old is a bit different and will sometimes eat breakfast at home and sometimes have it at school.
After School Routine
My kids know that when they come home, the first thing that needs to be done is homework! They each have their “homework space” in the house where they concentrate best. They will usually have a snack with their homework, so that makes the process a little easier. I diffuse oils a lot during school time to keep the families immunity up and I’m usually diffusing On Guard by DoTerra starting around lunch time and throughout the rest of the day and evening to help keep our immunities strong and bugs at bay. Also, has a nice scent to it. Once homework is done, backpacks get put in their designated spot and the girls have their computer time. We are a high-tech family, so each girl has their own computer. Others will probably think that our girls have too much screen time, and everyone has their own opinion, but they are usually quiet and not fighting, and I’m totally okay with that. 🙂
